WATCH: Graham Says Trump Could Make the GOP Bigger or Destroy It All Together
During the 2016 Republican presidential nomination race, Lindsey Graham said that Republicans would be destroyed if the nominated Donald Trump. And the prediction kind of came true. Now in 2020, Republicans have control of neither the White House, House or Senate.
But Graham has changed his tune. Rather than opposing Trump, he’s become his most ardent sycophant. During a recent interview with Jonathan Swan, the lawmaker said that Trump could make the party bigger. He also said that he may destroy it once and for all.
The South Carolina senator told the Axios reporter, “I want this to continue. I want us to continue the policies that I think will make America strong. I believe the best way for the Republican party to do that is with Trump, not without Trump.”
“What’s hard is to take a movement that I think is good for the country, try to get the leader of the movement, who’s got lots of problems facing him and the party and see if we could make a go of it. Mitt Romney didn’t do it. John McCain didn’t do it. There’s something about Trump. There’s a dark side and there’s some magic there. What I’m trying to do is just harness the magic. To me, Donald Trump is kind of a cross between Jesse Helms, Ronald Reagan and P.T. Barnum. I mean, it’s just his bigger than life deal. He could make the Republican party something bigger. He can make it more diverse. And he could also destroy it.”
