WATCH: GOP’s Cornyn: China is to Blame Because They Eat Bats, Snakes and Dogs

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been spending much of their time figuring out the best way to combat the coronavirus. Some Republicans, though, have also been spending time making sure they figure out who to blame for the crisis. And, for them, that blame has fallen squarely on China.

In the course of blaming China, some of these GOP members have said some incredibly racist things. John Cornyn may have taken the cake for offensive rhetoric on Wednesday when he said that China is to blame because they eat bat, snakes and dogs.

The Texas senator was asked by a reporter about Donald Trump’s insistence on referring to COVID-19 as the Chinese virus. He responded:

“China is to blame because the culture where people eat bats & snakes & dogs & things like that, these viruses are transmitted from the animal to the people and that’s why China has been the source of a lot of these viruses like SARS, like MERS, the Swine Flu.”

Ted Cruz made similar comments last week. The Texas lawmaker was defending Donald Trump’s coronavirus response. The quarantined senator said during his podcast, “I mean, he wasn’t serving bat soup in the Wuhan province. I mean, the idea of blaming all of this on Donald Trump is a little absurd. You can see the media trying to turn it politically. They want it to be the equivalent of Katrina.”
