WATCH: GOP Senator (& Doctor) Says Mask Bans Are A Mistake, & Vaccines Are Necessary To Stop Pandemic
A lot of Republican elected officials have downplayed the seriousness of COVID-19, and pushed back against precautions recommended to slow the spread and save lives. However, Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) says that bans preventing local governments from implementing such precautions are a mistake, and urges Americans to get vaccinated in order to stop this pandemic.
Appearing on CNN Sunday morning, Senator Cassidy answered questions about the pandemic from his perspective as both a medical professional and an elected official. He said that there is a way to stop the pandemic, but that to do so, people will have to get vaccinated.

Asked about attempts to ban local mask ordinances, Cassidy said that he disagrees with those, and believes that local governments should be free to determine if a mask mandate would help protect their citizens, and not be prevented from implementing such precautions by statewide bans.
The question surfaced thanks to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who despite recently recognizing the rise in hospitalizations in his state, and encouraging vaccinations, wants to ban mask mandates for public school districts.
In fact, Local 10 reports DeSantis is already being sued over the ban, which would otherwise prevent any school district from mandating masks for students. The suit is being brought by U.S. House candidate Reverend Elvin Dowling, who has school-age children in Florida, and argues that DeSantis’ ban violates a provision of the Florida Constitution that promises “a uniform, efficient, safe, secure, and high quality system of free public schools” — ‘safe’ being the relevant factor here.
Another Republican Governor, Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, recently expressed that he wishes he hadn’t supported and ecated legislation in his state banning mask mandates, and that he hopes his state will reverse it.
