WATCH: GOP Senate Candidate Says “I Don’t Care What Happens To Ukraine” & Everyone Is Disgusted

J.D. Vance has been polling well as a candidate to represent Ohio in the United States Senate, but he may have messed up when he appeared on Steve Bannon’s podcast, where he dismissed the crisis, saying he’s more focused on the United States’ southern border.

Vance made the statement before Vladimir Putin’s forces actually entered Ukraine, and wasn’t the only Republican to express that he was more concerned with the border at home than on another continent. Still, he went too far even for some on the right, actually declaring that he doesn’t care.

“We did not serve in the Marine Corps to go and fight Vladimir Putin because he didn’t believe in transgender rights…at the end of the day we served to defend our own country. It’s ridiculous that we’re focused on this border in Ukraine, and I gotta be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another.”

Vance explained that his priority was “Mexican fentanyl coming across the border,” though the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency notes (PDF) that China and India are also significant sources of fentanyl coming into the U.S., and that the drug doesn’t have to cross the southern border to make it into the country, so anti-immigration tactics aren’t going to stop it.

Even after the invasion, Vance spoke at CPAC about being “sick of being told we have to care more about people 6,000 miles away” than those here in the United States (although no one has suggested any such thing).

None of it is going over well.
