(WATCH): GOP Group is Terrified of Beto O’Rourke’s Popularity and Potential Candidacy

With so many Democrats running for the parties nomination, it’s fair to wonder who the GOP sees as the biggest threat. Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren all have their strengths and weaknesses.

The candidate who scares the GOP the most, however, may be former Texas congressman, Beto O’Rourke. According to Politico, Republican group, Club For Growth, is aiming to attack O’Rourke’s candidacy.

The fundraising group will be airing a two minute commercial that attacks O’Rourke’s “privilege”. They are particularly concerned with Beto’s strong performance in Texas, an important GOP stronghold.

David McIntosh, the Club for Growth president, says:

“We watched what he did in Texas in the race against Cruz and realized his potential within the Democratic primary system is enormously larger than what people are giving him credit for right now. We realized, here is a real potential threat because if he is the nominee then Texas suddenly is in play.”

The group is also concerned about how often O’Rourke is compared to Barack Obama. Obama, wildly popular among Democrats, left office with an approval rating of 57%.

While O’Rourke was unable to defeat Ted Cruz in his 2018 run for Senate, he came much closer than any Texas Democrat has in years. The state’s rapidly changing demographics will make it a hotly contested area for years to come.
