While the states the New England normally vote blue in national elections, there is an undercurrent of independence running through the region. So it is no surprise when a Republican governor holds office. Phil Scott in Vermont, Charlie Baker in Massachusetts and Chris Sununu in New Hampshire are all popular GOP lawmakers in blue states.
And these GOP governors are able to remain popular by governing from the middle. So they’ve often spoken out against the plague of Trump and how he has influenced the party. Especially when it comes to vaccinations. Sununu recently had harsh criticism for Trump acolyte Ron Johnson after he claimed that mouthwash killed COVID.
During an appearance on CNN, host Erin Burnett played the New Hamphire Governor a clip of Johnson’s comments. Sununu responded:
“When crazy comes knocking at the door, slam it shut. You can’t just tolerate it and say, ‘Oh, it’s a certain part of your population that is transmitting all this misinformation and it doesn’t matter.’ It does matter because it gets into the populous and it gives people doubt that you have to get your boosters, you have to get vaccinated.”
