The current right-wing trend is anger at Disney, over the company’s statement against Florida’s Don’t Say Gay bill, and over the new movie Turning Red, which horrifies conservatives by acknowledging that puberty and menstruation exist. One Republican candidate, however, has his own reasons for distrusting the company.
Conservatives have complained for a while about Disney being too ‘woke’ — by which they mean that the entertainment company has included a few LGBTQ characters, cast Black actors as a mermaid and genie, and addressed issues like climate change and gender equality. Now, they’re accusing the company of grooming kids for pedophiles, because Disney does make some minimal efforts at LGBTQ inclusion and support statements.
Jarrin Jackson, however, who’s running for Oklahoma State Senate, thinks that the proof of Disney’s victimization of kids lies in his own tendency to see genitals where there are none.
"Do you see Minnie (Mouse) in a dress?" asks Oklahoma GOP state senate candidate Jarrin Jackson. "Or do you see Mickey holding a penis?": "The people at Disney are pedophiles." pic.twitter.com/QTNhVnr4xD

“Disney has for the longest time been a children entertainment institution. This is a gift card taken last week at a Target store. What do you see? What do you see in that? What do you see in that image? Do you see Minnie in a dress, or do you see Mickey holding a penis? The people at Disney are pedophiles. The people at Disney are pushing a satanic, godless, child-predatory perspective.”
Jackson doesn’t seem to realize that the ‘perspective’ from which he sees the gift card is his own, not one forced on him by Disney.
Of course, Disney has been accused of the same before — Snopes addressed a similar claim about the cover of The Little Mermaid almost a quarter-century ago, so long ago that the discussion was about the cover of the VHS.
Then, too, people looking at the cover art came to the conclusion that the phallus they saw in the castle spires was not a product of their own minds or of the fact that a lot of things in nature and architecture can have a phallic shape, but somehow Disney trying to sneak genitals into their homes.
