Virginia has long been trending from a purple state to a blue state. In 2020, Joe Biden carried the state by more than 10%. Still, Glenn Youngkin was able to pull of a win in the Virginia Governors Race just a year later.
The Republican made two important decisions that helped him achieve victory. First, Youngkin avoided Donald Trump like a plague, not allowing the former president to campaign for him. Second, he made critical race theory the main issue of this campaign. Of course, critical race theory isn’t taught in Virginia schools. Youngkin was forced to admit that during a weekend Fox News interview.
Host John Roberts noted that Youngkin has signed an executive order banning critical race theory. He asked, “Is it your contention that critical race theory is being taught in Virginia public schools?”
“There’s not a course called critical race theory. All the principles of critical race theory, the fundamental building blocks of actually accusing one group of being oppressors and another of being oppressed, of actually burdening children today for the sins of the past, for teaching our children to judge one another based on the color of their skin. Yes, that does exist in Virginia schools today. And that’s why I have signed the executive orders yesterday to make sure that we get it out of our schools.”
The host followed, “Again, that’s the contention of critics, that there are no courses on critical race theory that are being taught in Virginia public schools.”
