In the months leading up to the invasion of Ukraine, Fox News anchors have been hesitant to criticize Vladimir Putin. Tucker Carlson has taken it a step further. The Fox prime-time personality has been downright complimentary of the Russian authoritarian leader.

Last week, Carlson wondered why Americans had been trained to hate Vladimir Putin. But during his Monday night show, the Fox host was asking why everyone thinks he was a fan of the Russian president.
In an effort to defend himself, Carlson slammed Rep. Eric Swalwell, who pointed out that Russian state television is playing clips of Carlson, Mike Pompeo, and Donald Trump praising Putin.
The Fox host then told viewers, “You know, it’s such an awful thing to say. We hesitated to even play it. It’s very common. You hear it every day. The question is: why are they saying that? It doesn’t make sense. But it makes political sense. It is an effort to cover their own tracks.”

The reality is that Swalwell is entirely correct in his statements. Russian media is using the words of prominent Conservatives to turn their country’s public opinion towards Putin. Carlson may be able to gaslight his viewers, but the evidence is there on video.
