Donald Trump has had a rough time putting a number of his immigration policies into action. The Washington Post reported that the frustrated president was hoping to punish political opponents by dropping detainees into sanctuary cities.
Democrats were befuddled by Trump’s punishment scheme. Sanctuary cities are generally welcoming to undocumented immigrants and they are represented in large numbers. Fox News hosts, Chris Wallace and Shepherd Smith met to bash the legality and rationale behind the president’s directive.
During the segment, Smith asked Wallace, ““Is this a talking point for the day? Is this an effort to change the news cycle or the narrative?”
Wallace explained, “Twice ICE said ‘you can’t do it. One, we don’t have funding to do it; two, we don’t have the buses to do it; three, there’s liability. What if there’s an accident, what if somebody gets sick or hurt?’ All kinds of reasons why they couldn’t do it.”
As the segment continued, Wallace claimed that Trump is only pushing this agenda to stoke his base. He told Smith, “This will never happen. This is the president saying ‘we’re not going to cower and try to pretend we didn’t really do this. I’m going to double down and suggest it. My base will like it.”
Despite White House efforts to downplay the plan, the president is all in on the sanctuary strategy. He tweeted, “Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only.”
