Fauci To Rand Paul: “If Anybody Here Is Lying It Is You”

For more than a year, Dr. Anthony Fauci has calmly withstood all manner of criticism of his public health advice regarding the coronavirus pandemic. The 40-year government servant is the nation’s leading infectious disease expert has an impeccable record of advising presidents and has testified numerous times before Congressional committees. He never appears flustered.

That’s why it was so remarkable today during a Senate hearing when Fauci lit into Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) when the Republican lawmaker repeated his lie about Fauci’s agency’s funding of Chinese virology research. Paul angered the physician when he accused him of lying to Congress. “Knowing it’s a crime to lie to Congress, do you wish to retract your statement where you said the NIH never funded gain of function research in Wuhan?” Paul asked.

Fauci could barely contain his anger. “Sen. Paul I have never lied before Congress,” Fauci shot back. “And Sen. Paul you do not know what you are talking about, quite frankly, and I want to say that officially. I totally resent the lie that you are propagating, senator. If anybody here is lying it is you.”

Once Paul’s time to badger Fauci expired Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) asked the doctor if he had anything further to say in response to what she called the “attacks on your integrity that we’ve just witnessed.”

“This is a pattern that Sen. Paul has now been doing at multiple hearings, based on no reality,” he replied. “I have never lied before Congress, I have never lied and certainly not before Congress. Case closed.”
