[WATCH] Erin Burnett Champions Science to Counter White House’s Baseless Hydroxycloroquine Hype

CNN’s Erin Burnett on Wednesday tore into White House trade adviser Peter Navarro for insisting that hydroxycloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, is effective at treating COVID-19, despite warnings by the FDA, the WHO, and scientists that it is not.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease specialist in the country, has also cautioned against using hydroxycloroquine as a prophylactic or cure for coronavirus.

Unfortunately, none of the above has been enough to change Navarro’s mind.

“Tony is a great guy,” Navarro said of Fauci on CNN’s Wednesday edition of Out Front. “There’s just disagreements on things like, for example, hydroxychloroquine. He has a strong point of view. There’s as many doctors on the other side.”

Burnett immediately shut him down.

“First of all, there aren’t,” she replied. “Peter, first of all, on a basic level, you’re an economist, not a scientist.”

Navarro then tried to deflect and change the subject, claiming that “there’s a lot of people out there” who believe in the drug’s efficacy and that it is “past time for us to have a debate about hydroxychloroquine.”

Burnett was having none of that either.

“There’s many millions of doctors in this country; there’s five peer-reviewed studies to show it not to be true; there’s Dr. Birx, there’s Dr. Girior, there’s Dr. Fauci… what you’re saying is irresponsible.”

But Navarro remained undeterred, next invoking a video by Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams in which he accuses CNN of killing people.

“He did a beautiful video on Twitter, and the thesis of the video is that CNN might be killing thousands because of the way they’ve treated that. I’ll let Scott Adams be my defense on this,” Navarro said.

“I find that to be offensive because he’s a comic strip writer,” Burnett responded.
