Much of MAGA was not happy with Donald Trump’s endorsement of Mehmet Oz for U.S. Senate. Known for his celebrity doctor status as a television host, Oz didn’t fully align with some of the values Trump’s fans hold dear, but the former president is now sharing exactly what influenced his endorsement.

Some of Trump’s otherwise avid supporters balked at Oz’s nomination, pointing out that the TV doctor has don’t things they find dismaying, like speaking in support of trans kids on his show, and otherwise failing to be as far-right as they are.
Trump defended himself in an interview, explaining that he’s known Oz for a long time, and that Oz is always nice to him and tells him how healthy he is, “which I like.”
Trump says he endorsed Oz because he was nice to him, said nice things about him, had him on his show, and “he said I’m a very healthy specimen, which I like.” pic.twitter.com/feqpaVqwoI

“I’ve known Oz for a long time and he’s been nice to me over the years. And that, you know, influences you in all fairness. I really liked him, I’ve been on his show, and he always treated me well. He said I’m a very healthy specimen, which I liked very much. Said if you lost a couple pounds that would be okay too but that’s alright.”
Oz won his Pennsylvania primary and is the Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat, after, as NBC reports, a race so close that a recount was required, though his near-tie opponent, Dave McCormick,
conceded before the recount was complete. The end result was Oz with 31.2% of the vote to McCormick’s 31.1%, giving Oz a win by only hundreds of ballots. In November he’ll face off against Democrat John Fetterman.
