In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Donald Trump was surrounded by top Doctors with significant infectious disease experience. Doctors Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx, however, did not always tell the president what he wanted to hear.
So the renowned and experienced doctors were replaced with Scott Atlas, a radiologist with no pandemic experience. On Sunday, Dr. Atlas encouraged the citizens of Michigan to ignore precautions meant to slow the spread of the illness. On Monday morning, CNN’s Alisyn Camerota tried to figure out whether Atlas was dangerous or just dumb.
Camerota had the discussion with Dr. Jonathan Reiner, Dick Cheney’s former cardiologist. She began the segment, “I have spent some time this morning trying to figure out any other explanation beyond dumb or dangerous. There’s no other explanation.”
The CNN host continued, “He’s either dumb and doesn’t know that words like that incite violence and that there was a domestic terror plot against the governor of Michigan because she tried to enforce some rules. Or dangerous in that he’s on some sort of dangerous power trip and likes the idea that this would incite violence. I can’t think of another explanation.”
Dr. Reiner weighed in, “He is dangerous, but he is not dumb. Remember, he gave an interview to RT [Russia Today] and after the fact tried to claim that he didn’t know that RT is essentially an arm of Russian propaganda. He knows exactly what he’s doing.”
