Republicans continuing to mount a disinformation campaign regarding the COVID-19 vaccines have conveniently forgotten that Donald Trump urged everyone to get vaccinated all the way back in February when he appeared at CPAC, shortly after he and Melania received their vaccines in secret before departing the White House for good. But they’re not doing it without a whole lot of help from the networks catering to the right: Fox News, OAN, and NewsMax.
While purporting to be the same level of respectable news media as print journalists from the New York Times or the Washington Post, most of the ‘anchors’ on NewsMax are just Trump stooges getting a paycheck for spreading propaganda on camera rather than just on social media. Fox News does nothing to control Tucker Carlson’s dangerous anti-vaccine rhetoric, and his continued ducking of the question of whether or not he himself is vaccinated is a fairly clear answer in and of itself.
When those networks were just lying about the 2020 election, that was one thing. But they were also sharing lies about the Coronavirus, which had been politicized in the worst possible way. The deliberately spreading of disinformation also led to the spread of the virus, which led to over 600,000 Americans dying. And those numbers will keep growing as unvaccinated Republicans are spreading the Delta variant and creating new superspreader events.
