So far, polling is showing that Donald Trump’s hand-picked candidates are not doing very well. And this has been an embarrassment for the former President. He would very much like to get involved in Republican primaries but never wants to be seen as a loser.
This week, the state of Missouri will determine their Republican candidate for senate. And two of the main candidates are named Eric, Schmitt, and Greitens. Trump decided to endorse both of them by releasing a statement that only included the name, Eric.
A CNN panel mocked Trump’s decision this morning with host John Avlon called it, “one of the weirdest things I’ve actually ever seen.”
S.E. Cupp jumped in, “What the hell is going on? I call this the ‘Hey, you!’ endorsement. When you don’t remember who is going in, you say, ‘Hey, you!’ Totally noncommittal. There was a point to this, because he doesn’t want to choose. On a serious note, this is… how unmotivated Trump is by ideas and principles and policies. Really, he just wants the allegiance.”
Jonah Goldberg then followed, “The way to think of the GOP is it’s not an ideological party anymore. It’s a conglomeration of weird factions and some of the factions are… crazy. So you’re going have a significant — not a majority, but significant enough for primaries and general elections — to provide the margin of victory for a segment of the parties that are basically QAnon adjacent.”
