Much more so than he did in 2016 and 2020, Donald Trump is attempting to court Black voters. For that reason, Florida Congressman Byron Donalds has emerged as one of Trump's top surrogates and is also considered to be one of the finalists for Trump's running mate.
Donalds has been appearing on cable television more these days acting as a surrogate for the former President. When he's on Fox or Newsmax, the Florida Rep. doesn't have to worry about being challenged over his remarks. But things were different when he appeared on CNN last night an attempted to spew disinformation.
Before the segment, Donalds had reportedly said, "You see, during Jim Crow, the Black family was together. During Jim Crow, more Black people were not just conservative — Black people have always been conservative-minded — but more Black people voted conservatively."
He then continued along those lines telling CNN's Abby Philip, "Where we are today — America is trying to have the economic policies and the public policies so that all people can thrive. And if you're actually going to compare economic policies and public policies between the 45th president and 46 president, it's without question, they were better under the 45th."
The host wasn't having it, she shot back:
"I'm going to interrupt you on the facts, Congressmen. The black unemployment rate was the lowest in American history under Joe Biden.... The poverty rate for Black people is the lowest under Joe Biden's [administration]. So you cannot say empirically for Black people that from a financial level things were better under Trump."
