[WATCH] California Governor Newsom Drags Florida Gov DeSantis in New Campaign Ad

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is running for reelection in California, but his latest television ad is airing in the increasingly Red state of Florida.

The 30-second spot scheduled to air on Fox News starting Monday takes shots at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his policies, while drawing a contrast with California. While Newsom has said he has no interest in running for President, the ad is sure to stoke speculation that he’s positioning himself for national office. DeSantis is a potential 2024 GOP candidate for the White House.

Newsom is also leading the Blue state effort to create abortion sanctuaries after the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe v Wade. DeSantis has also signed restrictive abortion policies into law in Florida, while Newsom signed a bill protecting abortion providers in his state from liability or prosecution for providing out-of-state abortions. California lawmakers also voted to ask voters on their November ballots to add an amendment to the state’s constitution that would explicitly protect reproductive rights.

Newsom’s ad makes it clear who DeSantis’ closest allies are. “Freedom, it’s under attack in your state. Republican leaders, they’re banning books, making it harder to vote, restricting speech in classrooms, even criminalizing women and doctors,” Newsom says while images of DeSantis and Donald Trump flash on the screen. “I urge all of you living in Florida to join the fight. Or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom — freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate, and the freedom to love,” Newsom says.

Newsom easily beat back a recall attempt last year and is expected to have a similarly easy path to reelection in November.
