Bill Barr is making the rounds on his redemption tour, marketing his new book and attempting to distance himself from the worst of the Trump Administration’s horrors. However, even as he claims to be denouncing the Big Lie and related actions that led up to the January 6th insurrection attempt, the former Attorney General can’t seem to stop making excuses for some of the possible criminal actions.

Here he is on Meet The Press, responding to questions about Trump’s call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Barr defends Trump’s demand to “find” more votes to flip the election outcome, claiming that all the former president meant was that he wanted a closer examination of votes that could be fraudulent. Even faced with Trump’s threats of legal repercussions for Raffensperger if he didn’t come through, Barr dodges, only saying that it’s “heavy-handed.”

“I listened to the whole call, and in my opinion, what I heard, was he was listing all the votes that he felt were questionable or fraudulent…I interpreted that statement as saying, ‘look, somewhere among all of these things that we think are fraudulent, surely you can find 11,700.”
NPR reported back in January that a Special Grand Jury had been approved in Georgia to continue the investigation of Trump’s efforts to overturn the election. This offers subpoena power, since some potential witnesses in the case have refused to cooperate or turn over relevant documents unless compelled.
However, even with the Grand Jury working to get to the root of Trump’s actions, Barr doesn’t seem to think that there will be any consequences. Asked about the possibility of an indictment, he affirms that he would be surprised if Trump is indicted.
