The man who was caught near Donald Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, has been charged with federal gun crimes.
Ryan Wesley Routh was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Local authorities said the Secret Service agents protecting Trump fired at Routh, who was pointing an AK-style rifle with a scope as Trump was playing golf.
Routh was able to get within 400 yards of the course before the Secret Service agents spotted him and opened fire as he ran.
Secret Service agents soon apprehended Routh, who was quickly discovered to be a former Trumper with a history of mental issues. Routh's social media accounts show his disillusion with Trump and devotion to Ukraine, along with increased support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
In July, following the (still not properly investigated) assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, Routh tweeted that President Biden and Vice President Harris should visit those wounded in the shooting at the hospital and attend the funeral for former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was killed at the rally.
[Corey Comperatore's widow declined to take a condolence call from President Biden when he phoned from the White House.]
The White House immediately denounced the alleged attempt on Trump with tweets from both the President and Vice President.
Despite that support and Routh's history being available online, Trump and his followers immediately took advantage of the situation, with Trump blaming his political rivals for "poisoning" and turning Routh against him.
Trump said Monday in an interview with Fox News Digital that Routh “believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it.”
