Watch as a 10-year-old Cub Scout Takes a Knee During Pledge of Allegiance
While matters of social justice can seem complicated for adults, they are seen differently though the eyes of a child. For 10 year-old Cub Scout, Liam Holmes, it is a simple matter of right and wrong.
Holmes made waves in his home town of Durham, North Carolina by taking a knee during the pledge of allegiance. His decision has led to both positive and negative reactions.
For Liam, the decision was easy. He explained, “What I did was took a knee against racial discrimination, which is basically when people are mean to other people of different colors.” The scout and his father had discussed the protest beforehand and Scott Holmes was proud his son listened to his conscience.
The City’s mayor, Steve Schewel, commended the 10 year old. He said, “Thank you, councilman, and thank you, scouts. To the scout that expressed his conscience by kneeling, we will say we endorse and appreciate all expressions of conscience in Durham City Council.”
Liam has also faced his share of detractors. Brandon LaRoque, a lifelong scout and veteran said, “Part of the scout oath is to God and your country, and I understand people have the right to freedom of speech. I just don’t understand why it has to be during the Pledge of Allegiance.”
The 10 year-old isn’t concerned about those who disagree with his stands, however. Liam says of his critics, “Well, those people just don’t listen.” He plans to kneel again in the future.
