Long before a group made up of white supremacists, Trump supporters, and far-right activists showed up at the U.S. Capitol Building to try to overturn the 2020 election, there were warnings. CNN reported in October 2020 — three months before the attack — that the Department of Homeland Security’s threat assessment found racist extremists to be “exceptionally lethal in their abhorrent, targeted attacks in recent years.” The report specifically addressed risks of election interference.

Now Attorney General Merrick Garland is reiterating this.

Describing conclusions in an FBI intelligence summary, Garland says, “The two most lethal elements of the domestic violent extremist threat are racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists, and militia violent extremists.” He goes on to say that the report confirms “the top domestic violent extremist threat comes from racially or ethically motivated violent extremists, specifically those who advocate for the superiority of the white race.”

This again echoes concerns already borne out on January 6th, and reiterated in March, when FBI Director Christopher A. Wray testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee to address concerns about January 6th attack. According to the Washington Post, Wray was forced to rebut false claims that ‘antifa’ or left-wing groups were involved in the attack, and that the role of white supremacists has been exaggerated.

Contrary to those claims, Wray confirmed that militia groups and white supremacists were ” the categories so far that we’re seeing as far as January 6th,” and that these dangers are still growing.
