[WATCH] Adam Schiff Says He Caught Kevin McCarthy In A ‘Blatant Lie’

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) claimed Tuesday that House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (Q-CA) lied to reporters about their conversations and had no explanation when confronted.

Schiff, who’s making the rounds on the news shows to promote his book about the first Trump impeachment, Midnight in Washington (which is being called “the definitive work” on the Mueller investigation and its aftermath), says McCarthy’s “willingness to lie without shame” was part of the broader problem afflicting U.S. democracy since Donald Trump entered politics, and he told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that “rooting out that threat” is the purpose of the House investigation of the January 6th insurrection.

Schiff has no grand illusions about where McCarthy’s loyalties are, despite his initial willingness to blame Trump for the January 6th insurrection. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) has already spoken on the House floor about her experience during the Capitol attack; she was in McCarthy’s office with him when he made the call to the White House to beg Trump to “call off his people”.

“One of the things that terrifies me about the upcoming midterms is we need to make sure that the party in power believes in the rule of law,” Rep. Schiff told the Morning Joe panel. “One of the stories I tell about Kevin McCarthy is, I was sitting next to him on a plane having a private conversation and then him going to the press and telling the press the exact opposite of our conversation, and when I confronted him on the House floor about this and said, ‘Kevin, you know I said the exact opposite of what you told the press,’ his answer was to me, ‘Yeah, I know, Adam, but you know how it goes.'”

Rep. Schiff also discussed his role with the Select Committee and the subpoenas issued to the members of Trump’s inner circle. “On this select committee, we are of one mind. Anyone who does not comply [with subpoenas] we will refer for criminal prosecution, and there needs to be accountability,” the California Congressman said. “It really is essential for us to bring our democracy back from the brink, that we once again have our rules applied equally to everyone.”

He also said that “moral corruption flows down” from the former guy, and it has infected much of the Republican Party.
