After all his recounts and legal efforts failed, Donald Trump decided Mike Pence was the key to him remaining president. All it took, Pence told his supporters, was for the Vice President to refuse to certify the election results.
Pence, though, knew he couldn’t do that. Still, his refusal enraged Trump supporters. And while the insurrectionists stormed the US Capitol, they chanted, “Hang Mike Pence!” The lawmaker was taken into hiding and according to ABC’s Jon Karl, there is video evidence of this, but Pence refuses to let him release it
Karl told Stephen Colbert on Monday night, “I got ahold of the (official White House) photographer, I actually saw all of the photographs. This is the vice president of the United States, and he’s like holed up in a basement.”
The ABC reporter continued, “I have a suspicion that the Jan. 6 committee is going to want to see the photos.” Colbert weighed in, “Those aren’t his photos,” to which Karl responded, “No, they’re your photos. They’re everybody’s photos here.”‘

Pence, looking towards his political future, has attempted to downplay the seriousness of January 6th. He even defended the insurrectionists in October, saying, “I know the media wants to distract from the Biden administration’s failed agenda by focusing on one day in January. They want to use that one day to try and demean the character and intentions of 74 million Americans who believed we could be strong again and prosperous again and supported our administration in 2016 and 2020.”
