WATCH: A Florida Prosecutor Explains Why Matt Gaetz’s Defense Strategy Won’t Work

Donald Trump had a number of sycophants during his time in office. People like Devin Nunes, Jim Jordan and Paul Gosar come to mind. But no one was louder and prouder about his support of the former president than Matt Gaetz.

But interestingly enough, it was Trump’s Justice Department, led by William Barr, that began an investigation into the Florida congressman for sex trafficking. Gaetz immediately began to mount a defense against the claims during an awkward appearance on Tucker Carlson’s show. But according to a Florida prosecutor, the congressman’s defense strategy is not going to work.

The Florida Rep. tweeted last night, “Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name. We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter.”

Dave Aronberg, the Palm Beach County state attorney told Joe Scarborough, “I think his main defense is going to be that he has never dated anyone underage, and this whole thing about extortion, as Joe correctly pointed out, that’s more of a smokescreen for the court of public opinion. That is not a defense to a charge of child sex trafficking, so let’s see what the evidence shows. I have a feeling we’re going to learn a lot more very soon.”
