[WATCH] 75 South Florida Doctors Stage ‘Symbolic Walkout’ To Protest Unvaccinated Patients

On Monday, the FDA granted full approval to the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, an important step that officials hope will instill more confidence among those reluctant to get vaccinated.

But even before they heard the good news, dozens of South Florida doctors staged a walkout on Monday to protest the number of unvaccinated COVID-19 patients flooding their hospital in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Just before sunrise, about 75 doctors stepped outside their hospitals and offices to stand together and encourage the community to get vaccinated. “We are exhausted. Our patience and resources are running low and we need your help,” said Dr. Rupesh Dharia from Palm Beach Internal Medicine. Currently, 85 percent of the ICU beds in the state are full.

These doctors are sounding the alarm and pleading for the community to get vaccinated by staging what they’ve dubbed a “symbolic walkout” as they won’t be leaving their patients without care. The frustrated doctors want people to “ignore the nonsense and the absurdities that you’re hearing people say at public meetings and recognize the value of what a vaccine will do”.

The walkout comes as COVID continues to decimate the Gulf Coast, which has relatively low rates of vaccination and often lax safety measures. They continue to insist it’s not a political move, but a call for help to all. “The vaccine still remains the most effective and reliable way to stop this madness,” said Dr. Leslie Diaz, an infectious disease specialist.

NBC News’ Kerry Sanders filed a report on the walkout from South Florida. Watch the full segment, below.
