Trump’s Continued Election Lies Still Hurting His Supporters, Capitol Rioters Learn
The Donald Trump supporters who attacked the nation’s Capitol Building on January 6th are still getting lessons in how the former president’s behavior reflects on them, and affects them.
In fact, Raw Story reports that one person charged in the January Capitol riot just found out that Trump’s lies will help keep him imprisoned.
Jack Whitton is facing several charges for allegedly participating in the Capitol riot January 6th, as listed by the Justice Department.
Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds with a Deadly or Dangerous Weapon
Engaging in Physical Violence in a Restricted Building or Grounds with a Deadly or Dangerous Weapon
Act of Physical Violence in the Capitol Grounds or Buildings
His indictment describes Whitton and others carrying out acts of violence. He and two co-defendants are described as using as weapons a police baton, a flag pole, and a crutch.
Judge Emmet Sullivan has now denied Whitton’s request for release, echoing an opinion he gave in the case of co-defendant Jeffrey Sabol, and saying that the defendants can’t show that their release would be safe for the community. He went on to cite Trump’s incitement of this attack, and suggest that the former president’s continued lies about the election could prompt a repeated response from the same suspects.
“Former President Donald J. Trump continues to make forceful public comments about the ‘stolen election,’ chastising individuals who did not reject the supposedly illegitimate results that put the current administration in place,” the opinion states, noting that Trump had issued an April 4 statement about a “rigged” presidential election…such comments reflect the continued threat posed by individuals like Mr. Whitton, who has demonstrated that he is willing and able to engage in extreme and terrifying levels of violence against law enforcement with a chilling disregard for the rule of law and the lives of law enforcement, seemingly based on mistaken beliefs about the illegitimacy of the current administration.”
