Trump Won A 2018 Golf Championship Without Even Playing In It
President Donald Trump’s locker in the men’s dressing room at the Trump International Golf Club boasts a new rectangular bronze plaque commemorating his latest title: “2018 Men’s Champion.” But there’s just one problem with the president’s greatest achievement in golf: he never played in the tourney.
“Green Book” movie investor Ted Virtue actually played and won the tournament at the golf course near the president’s Mar-a-Lago estate. After the tournament, Trump allegedly ran into Virtue and said, “The only reason you won is because I couldn’t play,” according to a Golf magazine report.
Virtue allegedly then gambled his championship in a nine-hole winner-takes-the-title challenge amateur round with Trump. The president won and reportedly said something to the effect of “This isn’t fair—we’ll be co-champions.”
The president’s most recent “win” brings his club-championship victories to 20 and they were all won at Trump golf courses. While the president prides himself on his golf game and once tweeted “I don’t cheat at golf,” a more accurate term for his most recent title would be “co-champion.”
Trump, has frequently visited his own clubs as president, including nearly 20 visits to the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach as well as his Bedminster, New Jersey golf course and his Virginia club. This weekend, while Trump was staying at his Mar-a-Lago residence, he played golf with pro golfer Dustin Johnson and LPGA star Lexi Thompson.
