Trump Slams Rep. Elijah Cummings’ Majority Black Congressional District

Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings has been a thorn in Donald Trump’s side since becoming the Chair of the House Oversight Committee earlier this year. Cummings has ferociously sought Trump’s tax records and in return, Trump sued the lawmaker in April.

Cummings also earned the ire of the President by grilling DHS head, Kevin McAleenan over the treatment of migrant children. This morning Trump took to Twitter to compare Cummings’ congressional district to migrant detention camps.

The President wrote, “Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA.”

Trump was immediately slammed for the post with conservative pundit Bill Kristol calling it racist. “‘No human being would want to live there,'” wrote Kristol. “You might say Trump is dehumanizing those Americans who do live there. You might say Trump hates some parts of America, and some citizens of America. Or you might cut to the chase and say our president is a bigot.”

Kristol also noted, “Not that it matters, but I believe the median household income in Mr. Cummings’ district is higher than that in the district of the ranking Republican member, Mr. Jordan, OH-4.”

538 writer Nate Silver replied to the President’s tweet with some background information on the actual makeup of the area. He wrote, “Not that it really matters but Cummings’ district has above-average college education rates and home prices, along with a pretty good mix of urban and suburban areas (even some rural), and well-off, working-class and middle-class areas.”
