Trump People Rally Around Murkowski Opponent
Lisa Murkowski had to know this was coming. Former president Donald Trump harshly criticized the Republican Alaska senator after she voted to convict him of inciting an insurrection during his second impeachment trial, saying, “I will not be endorsing, under any circumstances, the failed candidate from the great state of Alaska. She represents her state badly and her country even worse.”
On Monday the state’s commissioner of administration, Kelly Tshibaka, resigned from her state job to challenge Murkowski in next year’s midterm election and has hired a slew of Trump’s campaign advisers to work on her campaign. Tshibaka has hired the political consulting firm National Public Affairs and named Bill Stepien, Trump’s former campaign manager, and two other from the failed 2020 reelection effort as senior advisers. She also will have the Trump campaign’s communications director Tim Murtaugh working on her team.
Trump has yet to endorse Tshibaka, although she was effusive in her praise of the twice-impeached former president during a Tuesday morning interview on Fox News. In her campaign announcement the Harvard Law School-educated Tshibaka said she described herself as a candidate to represent “a new generation of Alaska conservatives” and says she’ll portray herself as the candidate to rebuild the Alaskan economy, defend and rejuvinate small businesses and fight to protect the jobs of Alaskans in the energy industry. She also said she is a strong opponent to illegal immigration, a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and an advocate for the military. Her campaign also called her “unapologetically pro-life.”
Interestingly, Murkowski’s fellow GOP senator, Dan Sullivan, recently said that he’s not on the Trump train and promised to back his fellow Alaskan in next year’s race. “Sen. Murkowski was a strong supporter of mine and we won that reelection, very strongly. Look we don’t agree on everything, but we make a good team for Alaska,” he added. “If Sen. Murkowski runs again, I’m going to support her.”
