Trump Offered Juicier Stories If Reporter Was Willing to out Anonymous Sources, According to New Report
Since the day Donald Trump took office, his White House has been inundated with multiple news leaks. The Trump Administration has made it a point to limit leaks and threatened to fire the offenders.
According to an excerpt for Cliff Sims new book, Team of Vipers, Trump himself has joined in on the hunt. Sims, who worked in White House Communications, described a story where Trump offered a New York Times reporter additional access if she named anonymous sources.
While he often rails against the media, Trump is always cognizant of what the New York Times says about him. Trump refers to the paper as “The Failing New York Times”, but the outlet remains one of the most respected in the world.
Sims’ story begins with a Times reporter citing multiple White House sources. Trump was desperate to get the names of those who gave anonymous quotes to the writer. In exchange for the names, he reportedly offered, “Of course, you know I could give you so much better stories—so much better.” The reporter did not bite on Trump’s offer of jucier stories. Outing anonymous sources can be a career ender for reporters who rely on their special access.
This is not the first time the president has been accused of bribing a member of the media. In her book, Megyn Kelly told of Trump offering free stays in New York City or Mar-a-Lago for positive coverage.
While Kelly claims she wasn’t swayed by the offer, others might have been. The former Fox News host wrote, “This is actually one of the untold stories of the 2016 campaign: I was not the only journalist to whom Trump offered gifts clearly meant to shape coverage. This is smart, because the media is full of people whose egos need stroking.”
