‘Trump Went Off His Meds’ Congressman Says About Budget And Border Wall Negotiations
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) said he believes Congress was on the verge of making a deal to keep the government funded until President Donald Trump “went off his meds.”
McGovern, the newly-appointed chairman of the House Rules Committee, made his remarks while speaking with Fox News’ Peter Doocy on Capitol Hill.
“I think it’s an embarrassment anytime the government shuts down … and this being no exception … , ” McGovern said Friday. “We’re going to work at it until we get to an agreement or a majority say yes.”
McGovern then went on to say that Congress had the President on its side until he “went off his meds and who the hell knows what happened.”
The partial government shutdown has gone on for six days as lawmakers and Trump haggle over funding for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Republicans hold the House, Senate, & White House until January 3rd. They shut this government down & they have an obligation to open it back up. If they continue refusing to do so, @HouseDemocrats will move to responsibly end the #TrumpShutdown on day one of the new Congress, ” tweeted McGovern on Thursday.
Trump has remained firm in his insistence that the federal budget will include funding for a border wall.
“We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with. Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve,” Trump tweeted Friday morning.
