President Trump on Friday criticized Michelle Obama’s comments on him in her new memoir, Becoming. Obama discusses several things in the new memoir, from IVF issues and her marriage to former president Barack Obama, as well as the birther rumors that Trump helped perpetuate.
The Washington Post and other news organizations reviewed early copies of the former first lady’s book, which is due out next Tuesday.
According to quotes taken from the book, Michelle Obama writes that she would “never forgive” Trump for the part he played in the birther rumors. She explains that the rumors threatened the family’s safety. Obama adds:
“What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”
Michelle also touches on the Access Hollywood tape of Trump claiming that Obama sexually assaults women. She recounts how her “body buzzed with fury” when she saw the tape. According to the Post, Obama writes, “IT was an expression of hatred that had generally been kept out of polite company, but still lived in the marrow of our supposedly enlightened society.”
CNN reports that Trump responded to the criticism Friday by telling reporters, “She got paid a lot of money to write a book and they always expect a little controversy.” He added that he won’t forgive Barack Obama for “what he did to our U.S. military.”
The president went on to say, “I’ll never forgive him for what he did in many other ways. What he did to our military made this country very unsafe for you, and you, and you.”
Considering her quote, “When they go low, we go high,” it’s unlikely Michelle Obama will respond to Trump again. Instead, she’ll let her comments in “Becoming” speak for themselves.
