Trump Issues a Warning to GOP Sen. Susan Collins

If the GOP is going to hold onto control of the Senate, there are a number of seats they have to protect. One of those seats belongs to Susan Collins in Maine. Collins normally sides with the President on most matters, but has shown independence at times.

Multiple polls have shown the long-time Maine Rep. trailing her likely Democratic opponent Sara Gideon. Instead of protecting the vulnerable GOP Senator, Donald Trump has decided to lash out at her. On Sunday night, the President called out Collins for criticizing his firing of Steve Linick.

Collins tweeted about the firing of Linick over the weekend. She wrote, “I have long been a strong advocate for the Inspectors General. They are vital partners in Congress’s effort to identify inefficient or ineffective government programs and to root out fraud and other wrongdoing.”

The Maine lawmaker continued, “The investigations and reports of IGs throughout the government help Congress shape legislation and oversight activities – improving government performance, providing important transparency into programs, and giving Americans better value for their tax dollar.”

Collins then took aim at Trump, noting, “The President has not provided the kind of justification for the removal of IG Linick required by this law.”

This quickly drew the ire of the President who wrote Sunday night, “This whole Whistleblower racket needs to be looked at very closely, it is causing great injustice & harm. I hope you are listening Susan Collins. I also hope that Shari Redstone will take a look at her poorly performing gang. She knows how to make things right!”
