Trump DC Hotel Looks To Cash In On Biden Inauguration
Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., seeking to cash in on President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, has more than tripled room rates that week in January.
According to the hotel’s website the least expensive room is priced at $2,225 a night for January 19 and 20. The hotel requires a two-night minimum stay during inauguration week, full prepayment of the room charge and will not refund that payment in the event the reservation is canceled. The average room rate at other times during January and February is about $436.
Historically, other hotels in the District of Columbia have raised their rates during times of high demand like inauguration week and have done so this year, but none has set prices as high as the Trump hotel. The Capital Hilton, in the 16th Street block that is Black Lives Matter Plaza and literally just steps from the White House, is $871 a night for Jan. 19 and 20.
Since Donald Trump took office the hotel, on Pennsylvania Avenue just blocks from the White House, has become the gathering place for Republican politicians, lobbyists, international visitors and others seeking to curry favor with the Trump administration. Trump’s ongoing ownership of the hotel during his presidency has led many critics to assert that he’s violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which prohibits the president from accepting anything of value from foreign entities.
The building also has been the focus of protests against Trump policies. Almost every night activists set up high-powered gobo lights across the street from it to project anti-Trump messages on the hotel facade.
