Trump Curses out Mick Mulvaney During Meeting With Democratic Leaders
Mick Mulvaney was not Donald Trump’s first choice to replace John Kelly as his Chief of Staff. Nick Ayers, Chris Christie and Robert Lightizer had all turned down the position before Trump turned to the former South Carolina congressman.
During a recent meeting to discuss the government shutdown the president let his displeasure with Mulvaney be known. According to Axios, Trump berated Mulvaney in front of Democratic leaders, telling him, “You just f*cked it all up, Mick.”
Mulvaney was attempting to find a point of compromise on the cost of the border wall. According to a source inside the room, “that if Dems weren’t OK with $5.7 [billion] and the president wasn’t OK with $1.3 [the Democratic offer] … he was trying to say we should find a middle ground.”
Making matters worse, the president reprimanded Mulvaney in front of Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. While there have been many stories of Trump berating his staff, these incidents usually occur behind closed doors. The president’s tenure in office has been marred by a number of resignations and firings.
A White House official claimed that the incident wasn’t a big deal. The official says, “This is an exaggerated account of the exchange that doesn’t reflect the good relationship Mulvaney has built over the last two years with the president. The president and Mulvaney joked about it afterwards.”
The Chief of Staff job is stressful under any president and has a high rate of turnover. Mulvaney will have to get used to these sorts of outbursts if he hopes to remain in the position.
