The Far Right Is Already Trying To Reframe SCOTUS Leak As An “Insurrection”

Republicans have been searching since January 6th, 2021, for something to frame as the “real” insurrection, because apparently projection never gets old if you’re the one doing it. They’ve turned their whataboutism to the protests and riots that rose up in response to racial injustice, and the former president has even tried to frame his re-election loss as the “real insurrection.” The latest? A leak of what seems to be a SCOTUS opinion draft.

Yes, as midterms draw near, Republicans are so desperate to point any finger possible, that they’re actually framing a leaked document — granted from a body that has never had such a leak in its history — as the equivalent of an armed attack on Congress and an attempt to overthrow the U.S. government.
Monday night, Turning Point USA‘s Benny Johnson declared the leak “an insurrection on the legal system.”
I have been covering politics for 20 years and *never* once heard of a draft SCOTUS opinion leaking.
This is an insurrection on the legal system and rule of law.

Senator Marco Rubio added his two cents Tuesday morning, retweeting a Vox journalist who described the leak [a someone on the inside deciding to (proverbially) “burn this place down.” Rubio suggested that this was a “leftist call[] to insurrection” and that the January 6th Committee should be investigating it.
I wonder if the Jan 6th commission will now be looking into these leftist calls to insurrection? https://t.co/hd7NnEUS3D

Fox host Tomi Lahren weighed in too, announcing on the air that she believed the leak would lead to protests and “dare I say, an insurrection.”
Fox host Tomi Lahren says Dems are going to hold an insurrection over Roe: “The only chance the Dems have in Nov is to rile everybody up, get people to the polls with these emotional, culture issues..You’re going to see summer 2020 reignited w/protests – dare I say insurrection.” pic.twitter.com/6XBrAT8RX8

“I know that’s a dirty word,” she added.
Leaks from the top court in the nation matter, of course, as do assaults on established rights and freedoms, and there are already responses from politicians and their constituents in defense of both, but surely trying to call everything (except an actual attempted coup) an insurrection has to get old at some point, right?
