Texas Republicans’ Stupid Tweets About Democrats and Energy Come Back to Haunt Them

Republican lawmakers from Texas are eating their own words about how Democrats are supposedly bad at managing state power grids as millions of Lone Star State residents are without electricity during the worst winter storm in recent memory.

Climate change-denying, “yee-haw, hardy-hardy-har” Republicans like Governor Greg Abbott are to blame, New York Times journalist and native Texan Kurt Eichenwald tweeted on Monday.

Eichenwald – famous on Twitter for hammering conservatives – wrote that the GOP’s rejection of science and consequent failure to plan for environmental emergencies come at a devastating cost.

But Abbott is far from the only science-rejecting conservative whose hypocrisy and gleeful ignorance have led to needless suffering and death during Winter Storm Uris.

In 2019, Senator John Cornyn tweeted an article from The Babylon Bee entitled, “Texas Luring Jobs Away From California With Promises Of Electricity,” which claimed that California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, was “working on a wall to keep people and jobs from leaving California. The planned wall should extend along the entire California border, except for the southern part.”

The piece mentioned that Newsom “was dismissive of Texas’s claims.” Rightly so:

‘They’re making false claims of being able to deliver electricity 24/7,” Newsom said, ‘but it just can’t be done.’ Newsom was also dismissive of the Lone Star State’s other claims, such as affordable housing, plenty of water, cheap gas, plastic straws, and not constantly being on fire. ‘It sounds made up,’ said Newsom. ‘I don’t even think there is a Texas.’

In August of 2020, Senator Ted Cruz accused California of being “unable to perform even basic functions of civilization, like having reliable electricity.”

He blamed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, who were not the president and vice president at the time, as well as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, for energy shortages during a heatwave.

“Biden/Harris/AOC want to make CA’s failed energy policy the standard nationwide,” wrote Cruz. “Hope you don’t like air conditioning!”

On the morning of September 7th, Cruz suggested that Democrats – specifically Biden and Harris – want to eliminate air conditioning:

Socialism sucks. With Biden-Harris, this train wreck of an energy policy is coming to your state too. Their new slogan: if you want to live without air conditioning—vote Democrat.

A few hours later, actor Steven Pasquale ripped Cruz for his previous tweet:

Assh*le, it’s climate change-related 120 f*cking degrees in LA. Let’s push all the Ac’s to the max so the power grid goes down too? There is no way you are this stupid.

But Cruz just kept digging:

Some angry Lefty actor thinks California is the only place that has Summer. It’s hot everywhere—try Texas every summertime—but the rest of the country doesn’t have such a dysfunctional state govt that you can’t turn the lights on or run A/C. That’s a policy failure of the Dems.

Similarly, on September 8th, Representative Dan Crenshaw asked Amazon’s Alexa to “show me what happens when you let Democrats control energy policy.”

Rationing power during heatwaves is nothing new, however, the crisis in Texas and other breadbasket states such as Oklahoma are grim reminders that when Republicans reject science, people die.
