Ted Cruz: Sen. Sherrod Brown a “Complete Ass” for Wearing a Mask
If ever there was an exchange that perfectly captured the ill-informed, idiotic opposition to wearing a mask, it happened yesterday on the floor of the U.S. Senate.
Alaska Republican Dan Sullivan was presiding over the chamber and recognized Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown who had risen to speak. Brown, who was wearing a mask, said, “I’d start by asking the presiding officer to wear a mask as he speaks and people below him are … I can’t tell you what to do but I know that behavior …”
Sullivan cut him off and declared, “I don’t wear a mask when I’m speaking like most senators. I don’t need your instruction.”
Brown replied, “I know you don’t need my instruction but clearly there isn’t much interest in this body in public health.” The Ohioan then criticized Donald Trump for not having participated in a White House coronavirus task force meeting in months and laid into Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for calling senators back to Washington as the pandemic surges to vote on “an unqualified nominee.” Brown was referring to Judy Shelton, who Trump nominated for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board. Her nomination appears to be in jeopardy as three Republicans have expressed doubts about her qualifications.
Brown said McConnell “just doesn’t seem to care” about the health and well-being of Senate staffers and others who must be in the chamber when the body is in session. Brown tweeted a video clip of his exchange with Sullivan. As of Tuesday morning it had garnered more than two million views.
Once again, I asked my Republican colleagues to stop endangering all the Senate workers – and simply wear a mask when presiding over the Senate.
Once again, they refused. pic.twitter.com/lykJO8MWmI

Texas Republican Ted Cruz thought he would jump to Sullivan’s defense, tweeting that Brown was “being a complete ass” and wearing a mask “as an ostentatious sign of fake virtue.” He added that Sullivan was 50 feet away from Brown and, therefore, didn’t need to wear a mask.
This is idiotic. @SherrodBrown is being a complete ass. He wears a mask to speak—when nobody is remotely near him—as an ostentatious sign of fake virtue.@DanSullivan_AK was over 50 feet away, presiding. Last I checked 50 feet is more than 6 feet. https://t.co/BoIGrAV7T1

Cruz pretty much immediately got trolled for his uninformed comments as Twitter users pointed out the Senate staffer sitting just a couple of feet away from Sullivan as he spoke mask-less.
And look at Sherrod Brown, ostentatiously wearing a mask when there’s no human (who counts) anywhere near him! All for show! pic.twitter.com/QadETWxLIC
