Steve Schmidt Annihilates Kevin McCarthy for Threatening Nancy Pelosi

Lincoln Project founder and former Republican Party operative Steve Schmidt laid absolute waste to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) after McCarthy threatened to beat Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) with an oversized gavel that he received as a gift.

“It will be hard not to hit her with it but I will bang it down,” McCarthy said at a private fundraising event in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, insisting that it was intended as a joke. But with the escalating violent rhetoric emanating from the American political right – which is no doubt a lingering symptom of Donald Trump’s ugly presidency – McCarthy’s remarks were unbecoming of a lawmaker of his stature and potentially downright dangerous.

Thus, on Sunday afternoon, Schmidt took to Twitter to put McCarthy in his place. The amazing thread is below.

“I’d like to make a couple of points with regard to the discussion below. @JohnHardwood is one of the best journalists and commentators in America and I think it is important to delve deeply into @GOPLeader McCarthy’s violent fantasy around assaulting an 81-year-old woman, a grandmother, a Constitutional Officer third in line to the Presidency, the Speaker of the House, @SpeakerPelosi. He did this in front of a crowd of 1400 cheering Republican extremists in Nashville, Tennessee. I don’t think it should be framed as an echo of Trump but rather for what it is, an embrace of violence for the purposes of political power,” Schmidt tweeted.

“Kevin McCarthy shouldn’t be given the benefit of the doubt. He is one of the greatest bad-faith actors to ever hold political power in this country, he is manifestly unfit at a moral level as he has broken faith with the ideals and ideas of the country in a sick partnership with Trump. They are the leader of a Nationalist and Autocratic movement that teems with liars and violent thugs. McCarthy’s opportunism led to a brief crisis of conscience around his thermonuclear cynicism when he momentarily believed the ball might bounce towards universal revulsion around the murderous insurrection and he blamed Trump,” Schmidt continued.

“That is all the evidence that will ever be needed to prove that he is a willing participant in an ongoing attack on our way of life. Trump has found his fanatics. McCarthy has embraced them and violence is always at the core of these movements. None of this is accidental. It is deliberate and purposeful. It is occurring 7 months after 1/6. McCarthy has become poisoned by hate, ambition, and a thirst for power,” wrote Schmidt.

“He loves power more than his country, which he has sundered and attacked with lies, conspiracies, and a type of vandalism committed with Nihilistic glee. History is clear on the following point when elected leaders turn away from democracy and their oath towards power and self-interest, violence always follows. When these people threaten violence it should be taken seriously. Fighting back against Trump, his movement and its leaders like McCarthy means dealing with constant death threats, smears, intimidation through intimations of violence, and sophisticated misinformation campaigns aimed at destroying reputations,” Schmidt said.

“Trump and McCarthy have broken the compact between us about how we divide and share political power. That compact is 245 years old and they have desecrated it. Tragedy and violence will follow and it is important to be clear about this now, so when blood flows there will be no confusion about who is to blame. Their evasions of responsibility are as predictable as the Sun rising the East,” Schmidt concluded.
