Steele: Lindsey Graham Was Right That Trump Would Destroy the GOP

Yes, there’s always a tweet for that. Today seems like the perfect time to revisit one from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) during the 2016 Republican party. “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed … and we will deserve it.”

The finger pointing and recriminations within the GOP about the disastrous presidential and Georgia runoff election resultsĀ  already has begun, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) reportedly ready to go to war with Trump and his allies to wrest control of the party. McConnell’s call for Republican senators not to object to the certification of Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory is being ignored by at least a dozen of his colleagues, a move that former GOP Chairman Michael Steele says proves that Graham was correct in 2016.

Asked by MSNBC anchor Stephanie Rhule to comment on the tweet, Steele said, “It’s prescient. It was truthful then and it’s truthful now as evidenced by the wreckage and ruin of the Republican leadership. They are soon out of power and today will be the day, in my view, if this goes forward as planned, where Republican senators – I don’t care if it’s 13 or just one – stands up to the duly confirmed election of Joe Biden, it will be sealing the Republican party inside the tomb that Donald Trump has created for them.”

Steele, who renounced his membership in his former party over Trump’s seizure of control of it and joined the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, was unsparing in his critique of Republicans. “You took yourself out of the position to govern, you took yourself out of position to lead the country forward by following some crazy guy who believed it was all about him and not the Constitution. And if this plays out today then Lindsey Graham’s words will hang as an epitaph on that tombstone.”
