Spotify Promised Listeners Accurate Vaccine Info; Experts Say Joe Rogan’s Space On The Platform Is A Failure Of That Policy

Hundreds of doctors and public health experts are calling out Spotify after the platform promised to promote accurate health information, and is instead allowing Joe Rogan to use his space to push disinformation and anti-vax conspiracy theories.

In September, Spotify made a promise. The company expressed that it recognizes the size and reach of its service, and the responsibility associated with that.

Spotify understands the power of our global platform, and with that power comes a responsibility to play our part in driving change and raising awareness about critical issues facing our society today. Last year, soon after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we determined that our fans and listeners should be able to turn to our platform for information and guidance…Now, we’re using our platform once more, by proactively making it easier for our listeners to access accurate information about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Despite that, they’ve allowed Joe Rogan to continue promoting the exact opposite, says an open letter from hundreds of doctors and health experts.

“He has discouraged vaccination in young people and children, incorrectly claimed that mRNA vaccines are “gene therapy,” promoted off-label use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19 (contrary to FDA warnings), and spread a number of unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.”

They specifically express concern about Dr. Robert Malone appearing as a guest on the podcast, and by extension the platform, citing his comparisons of COVID-19 vaccinations to the Holocaust, and various unsupported anti-vax conspiracy theories.

Also, the letter points out that the average listener to Rogan’s podcast is 24 years old — falling in the age group that is 12 times more likely to land in the hospital with a COVID-19 infection if unvaccinated, than if vaccinated against the virus.

Spotify has at this time offered no response.
