To see them on air, Fox anchors have been confident in Donald Trump winning the 2020 election. Sure, they say, the polls may have him down significantly. But they argue that the polls were “wrong” in 2016 and there’s no reason that can’t happen again.
Behind closed doors, though, they are reportedly singing a different tune. According to a new Vanity Fair report, Laura Ingraham told Fox heads that they have to be prepared for a world where Trump loses.
Gabriel Sherman writes that Roger Ailes’ widow, Elizabeth, hosted a dinner for high-ups in the Fox News orbit. The attendees were worried that at this point, Trump won’t stop his continued unforced errors.
Ingraham, one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, told the guests, “We have to be prepared for Trump losing.”
Sherman also notes that Ingraham could be angling to take over Rush Limbaugh’s radio spot. Limbaugh is suffering from Stage 4 lung cancer.
The network also has faced the anger of the President over their polls and coverage. In mid-June, Trump tweeted, “Fox News is out with another of their phony polls, done by the same group of haters that got it even more wrong in 2016. Watch what happens in November. Fox is terrible!”
Fox is also facing competition from more Trump favorable networks like OANN. There was even a debunked rumor that Donald Trump Jr. could be seeking an ownership in the network.
The President tweeted about OANN in early May writing, “I hate to be promoting AT&T, but OANN is Great News, not Fake News. Everybody should be carrying them!”
