There are plenty within Donald Trump’s orbit that would like him to cut ties with Rudy Giuliani. There doesn’t seem to be much benefit for the President to retain his sometimes lawyer. Trump, though, has a lingering affection for the former New York City Mayor.

Trump has long used audits as a way to prevent his returns from being released. On Thursday, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters:
“The media’s been asking this question for four years, and for four years, the president has said the same thing, his taxes are under audit, and when they’re no longer under audit, he will release them.”

Giuliani contracted this talking point while speaking with Maria Bartiromo on Sunday. “All these tax returns have been by and large — maybe not the last one — but all of them have been audited, all of them have either been passed on or settled,” he told the host.
The former New York City Mayor continued, “There should be some finality in tax returns. We get audited, we make a deal, we pay the government, you don’t come after me forever for that.”
