Donald Trump is desperate to get back into the White House. And the former President has been flexing his political muscles within the party. Many in the GOP are seemingly behind the former President. Liz Cheney was recently ousted from a leadership position. For voting for Trump’s impeachment.
That does not mean, though, that there aren’t other Republicans that might like to run for office in 2024. Ron DeSantis has become one of the GOP’s biggest stars. And a recent straw poll showed the Florida governor leading Trump among Republican voters.
The poll was conducted this weekend at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver. 74% of those asked said that approved of DeSantis as their candidate. 71% approved of Trump as the party’s standard bearer.
DeSantis has remained coy about his 2024 plans. Former Trump staffer Mark Meadows recently claimed that DeSantis will be running for re-election in Florida rather than challenging Trump.
Trump, seemingly aware of DeSantis’ rising popularity has recently discussed making the Florida running mate in 2024. He recently told Fox’s Stuart Varney, “I was the first one to endorse him when he came out as a congressman that a lot of people didn’t know, and my endorsement helped him tremendously.”
