Senators in Both Parties Erupt in Laughter at Donald Trump’s Defense Team’s Video ‘Evidence’

The United States Senate demonstrated some rare bipartisan comradery on Friday during a presentation by ex-President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense attorney David Schoen.

As a counter to the jarring videos that House impeachment managers played to showcase Trump’s guilt in inciting an insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th, Shoen played clips of Democrats speaking to anti-Trump protesters, whom Shoen claims were driven to violence by Democratic lawmakers.

According to PBS News Hour‘s Yamiche Alcindor, who was in attendance, Schoen’s gambit was so poorly-received that Senators on both sides of the aisle reportedly erupted into laughter and mockery at the sheer absurdity of the defense’s argument.

“Out of the Senate chamber and my goodness that was something to witness. Senators (Dems and GOP) were louder than I have ever heard them — talking and at times openly laughing — during that long video played by David Schoen of Democrats, reporters & commentators saying ‘fight,'” Alcindor tweeted.

“During the spliced video featuring Senator Elizabeth Warren [D-MA] for a long while, Senator Tom Cotton [R-AR], in particular, was laughing and shaking his head,” she wrote. “Many Democrats were exchanging troubled looks including [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer [D-NY], who looked particularly troubled but also laughed and shook his head at times.”

Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) “reacted audibly to being featured in the Trump lawyer video & chuckled at the end when he was quoted as saying he approved the message. Sen Booker on the other hand didn’t seem to have a visible reaction to being featured & instead stared intently at the video,” Alcindor continued, while Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) “on the other hand didn’t seem to have a visible reaction to being featured & instead stared intently at the video.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, (R-KY), meanwhile, “was not laughing or reacting to the Trump lawyers’ extended video of Dems and reporters. Instead, Alcindor added, McConnell, “sat stone-faced, legs crossed as the video was played. No laughing, no whispering, no looking around.”
