Sen. Doug Jones Blasts GOP Lawmakers for Refusing to Wear Masks

The White House has put out specific guidelines on how to avoid contracting COVID-19. These guidelines included the wearing of masks in public settings, not just for your own safety, but for the safety of others.

During Tuesday’s Senatorial Hearing, most Democrat lawmakers wore masks, while most Republicans chose not too. In a recent interview with CNN, Alabama Senator Doug Jones ripped those senators, saying they should be setting a better example.

The Alabama lawmaker says that Republicans aren’t just avoiding masks for show, they’re avoiding them all together.

“I was waiting to get on the subway yesterday, and a group of Republican senators got off,” he recounted. “Not a single one of them or their staffs were wearing masks,” he continued. “I think that sends a wrong message. I would like to see the administration — the president, the vice president, whenever they are out, they need to be wearing a mask.”

Jones continued by saying that mask wearing is not only for individual protection. He continued, “I think we have to set an example. I’ve been trying to do that in my home state for the last six weeks or seven weeks. Set an example. Try to tell people, ‘It’s OK. It’s not a cultural shock to wear a mask out in public these days, because I want to protect your health. And I want you to protect mine.’”

Not only would the GOP senators be setting an example if they wore masks, they may also speed up the demise of COVID-19. A recent study showed that cases of the disease would dwindle if 80% of the population would wear masks.
