Secret Service Delays Congressional Hearing On Trump Rally Shooting

The U.S. Secret Service postponed a Congressional meeting on Monday where it was due to field questions about why their agents failed to prevent a gunman from firing on Donald Trump at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Reuters reported that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle had been scheduled to brief Republican members of the House Homeland Security Committee via a virtual meeting Monday afternoon. The highest-ranking Democrat on the Committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson, was also set to be a part of the briefing as well.

Instead, Cheatle asked for the session to be rescheduled, according to a panel aide who spoke to Reuters. The aide said the committee expects to "receive an alternative briefing date" from the Secret Service "promptly."

The Secret Service is still on the docket to brief members of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday, and Cheatle is still expected to appear before that panel for a broader and in-depth hearing on July 22nd.

In her first public statement since the shooting, Cheatle said on Monday the Secret Service was increasing security for Trump and the Republican convention in Milwaukee. "I am confident in the security plan our Secret Service RNC coordinator and our partners have put in place, which we have reviewed and strengthened in the wake of Saturday's shooting," Cheatle said in her statement.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are receiving daily security briefings along with Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Secret Service protection will also now be assigned to brand new MAGA VP nominee JD Vance and his wife, Usha.
