Earlier today, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared to confirm what many already know: That President Donald Trump doesn’t care if his powerful allies lie to the FBI.
The exchange, caught on camera, took place as Sanders asked questions about former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to federal authorities about his conversations with Russian officials, including Sergey Kislyak, the former Russian ambassador to the United States.
“Michael Flynn today tweeted that he did lie to the FBI—to them repeatedly—and that he was working for a foreign government during the campaign,” Washington Post reporter Josh Hawley told Sanders.
“Does that concern the president? I mean, he seems to be concerned that Michael Cohen is a liar—is he concerned that one of his top aides lied to the FBI and was working for a foreign government?” Hawley asked.
“Not when it comes to things that have anything to do with president,” Sanders replied.
She added: “The activities that he [Flynn] engaged in don’t have anything to do with the president.”
