Russian Investigation Was Not A Hoax — Rod Rosenstein Contradicts Trump
On Wednesday, Rod Rosenstein contradicted Donald Trump’s long-standing insistence that Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election was a ‘hoax.’ Trump and his supporters have referred to the investigation as a Democratic hoax planned to nullify the results of the election and silence conservative voices. Now former Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein is contradicting this, saying that he has confidence in the integrity of former Special Counsel Mueller.
The Mueller investigation had netted criminal charges against 34 individuals by the time it closed in 2019, according to NPR. However, there were no criminal charges against the president for any kind of collaboration with Russian agents to carry out this interference, though Mueller expressly said that his report did not exonerate Trump in those matters. Trump has continued to call the investigation a hoax, linking it expressly to former President Barack Obama and to Trump’s 2016 election opponent, Hillary Clinton.
So President Obama knew about Russia before the Election. Why didn’t he do something about it? Why didn’t he tell our campaign? Because it is all a big hoax, that’s why, and he thought Crooked Hillary was going to win!!!

As a congressional committee again questions the origins of that investigation, they took testimony Wednesday from Rod Rosenstein, who was, at the time, serving as Trump’s Deputy Attorney General. Rosenstein said that he couldn’t vouch for allegations about how surveillance that picked up the Trump team’s interactions with Russia was carried out, but he was very clear on whether the investigation itself was a politically-motivated attack.
He said that the investigation was not a ‘hoax,’ and affirmed, “I have confidence in Mr. Mueller’s integrity.”
As Trump has continued to complain about the investigation, he has asserted that it was an attack by the Obama administration, even coining the term “Obamagate” and insisting that there was criminal activity from the former administration. He has closely associated his current presumptive opponent for the 2020 election, Joe Biden, Obama’s Vice President, with the purported criminal activity as well. However, Attorney General Bill Barr has stated that he does not expect this investigation into the investigators to result in any charges against Obama or Biden.
